They end up spending more time checking into hotels and catching flights than seeing the places they came for. But which of those places are worth your limited days, and which ones can wait for a second trip.

Best Places to Visit in Vietnam for a First Trip

For a first Vietnam trip, the strongest combination for a first-timer is Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and either Da Nang or Hoi An. Everything below explains why, and where Ninh Binh, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc fit in if you have more time.

Hanoi

Best for: Food, old streets, and a first real taste of Vietnam Stay: 2–3 nights

Hanoi works well as a first stop, the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, street food stalls and small cafés sit within walking distance of each other. Mornings are for coffee and street food, evenings for walking the lake and old streets, which stay busy and lit up late.

However, Old Quarter is loud, traffic doesn’t stop, and crossing the road takes some nerve at first. If you want a slower, quieter city, Hanoi is not that. But for a first taste of Vietnam, three nights is worth it. Two works if you’re short on time, but you’ll be moving quickly.

Ha Long Bay

Best for: The cruise itself, not sightseeing on land Stay: 1 night (overnight cruise)

Ha Long Bay isn’t a city stop, it is an experience added onto a Hanoi-based route. Most travellers do it as an overnight cruise, not a day trip, and the difference matters. A day trip means driving three-plus hours each way for a few hours on the water. An overnight cruise means one transfer, a night on board watching the limestone cliffs at sunset and sunrise, and a kayak or cave visit built in. If you’re doing Ha Long Bay at all, the overnight version is worth the effort.

If you get seasick easily, dislike group activities, or you’re on a very tight timeline, it’s fine to skip this one. Ninh Binh (below) offers a land-based alternative with a similar visual payoff.

Ninh Binh

Best for: Countryside scenery without another city stop Stay: Day trip from Hanoi, or 1 night if you want it slower

Ninh Binh gets compared to Ha Long Bay because both offer limestone karst scenery, but this one is on land and water together. Trang An and Tam Coc both involve a small boat rowed through caves and karst formations, and Mua Cave adds a steep climb to a viewpoint over the rice fields.

As a day trip from Hanoi, Ninh Binh works well, about two hours each way, so you can go and return without losing a hotel night. If you want a slower pace, one night lets you catch the early boat before tour groups arrive, a genuinely different experience from the midday crowds. Choosing between the two comes down to whether you want a cruise with an overnight stay, or a quicker detour that doesn’t cost a travel day.

Da Nang

Best for: A comfortable base with beaches and easy logistics Stay: 2–3 nights

Da Nang is often treated as a stopover on the way to Hoi An, but it works well as a base on its own. The airport is central, the beach runs along the city, and it’s the easiest jumping-off point for Ba Na Hills, the hilltop park with the Golden Bridge, now running on a ticket valid across three consecutive days.

Da Nang’s food scene is strong and less touristy-priced than Hoi An’s old town, and the city is easy to get around by Grab. If your priority is beach time with a working city around it, base here rather than in Hoi An.

Hoi An

Best for: Old town atmosphere, evenings, and couples Stay: 2 nights

Hoi An and Da Nang are only 45 minutes apart, but they’re not interchangeable. Da Nang is a functioning modern city; Hoi An is a preserved old town built around the river, with lantern-lit evenings, tailoring shops, and a walkable core that closes to traffic at night. It’s the better pick for atmosphere over convenience, slow dinners, café-hopping, a bike ride into the rice paddies outside town.

Two nights is enough to see the Ancient Town properly, eat well, and get one cycling or countryside excursion in. Staying longer makes sense mainly if you want beach time nearby (An Bang Beach is close). Skip it if your trip is under 6 days and Da Nang is already in the plan, the two towns overlap.

Ho Chi Minh City

Best for: City energy, food, and a different side of Vietnam Stay: 2 nights

Ho Chi Minh City feels distinctly different from the north, busier, more modern in parts, with a food and café culture worth exploring on its own. The War Remnants Museum and older colonial-era streets add historical context, and a Mekong Delta day trip is a common add-on for a look at rural southern Vietnam.

Adding Ho Chi Minh City to a short northern-and-central itinerary means another domestic flight, another hotel change, and less time everywhere else. It’s worth including on a 10-day-plus trip. On a 6–8 day trip, it means cutting real time from Hanoi or Hoi An, which isn’t a good trade for most first-timers.

Phu Quoc

Best for: Beach resorts and doing nothing Stay: 3+ nights if you go

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s main beach-resort island, and it’s a good choice if what you actually want is beach time, resort pools, and slow days — not city sightseeing. It doesn’t connect naturally to the rest of a north-to-central route; it’s its own detour, usually reached by a separate domestic flight.

Choose Phu Quoc if beaches and downtime are your priority, and you have 8–10 days so it doesn’t eat your whole trip. Skip Phu Quoc if you only have 6–8 days and would rather get a first look at Vietnamese cities and culture, Da Nang’s beaches can cover that part without a separate flight.

5–6 Days

Hanoi (3 nights) + Ha Long Bay overnight cruise (1 night) + Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi. Keep it to one region, no flight.

7–8 Days

Hanoi (2–3 nights) + Ha Long Bay overnight (1 night) + Da Nang or Hoi An (2–3 nights), connected by one domestic flight. This is the best-balanced first-timer route.

10–12 Days

Add Ho Chi Minh City (2–3 nights) to the route above, or swap in Phu Quoc for a beach finish. Either way, a third region now makes sense instead of feeling forced.

Places You Can Skip on Your First Trip

Skipping a place doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting, it means it’s better saved for when you have more time.

• Phu Quoc, if your trip is under 8 days, it’s a detour that eats a flight and days better spent elsewhere.
• Ho Chi Minh City, if you’re already covering Hanoi and central Vietnam in under 8 days, adding the south usually means cutting time from places you’ve already chosen.
• Hue, unless you have 10+ days, worthwhile, but it duplicates some of what Hoi An and Hanoi already offer for a first-timer.
